Looking to find out more about the popular tourist hot spot of LANZAROTE? The fourth largest of the Canary Islands is a popular holiday destination all year round and attracts millions of visitors every year. The island was first discovered during the 1tth century and was conquered for the Spanish crown by a French nobleman in the early 1300´s. Providing a spring board for the invasion of the remaining six islands in the archipelago. All of which became of strategic importance to the growing Spanish empire as they provided the perfect staging post between the Old World and the growing empire in South and central America. The island enjoyed a period of prosperity as a result in the 17th and 18th centuries, fattened by the slave trade and other export businesses. Before being rocked by massive volcanic eruptions in the 1730´s which wiped out some of the best farmland on Lanzarote. Mass market tourism arrived in the early 1970´s – thanks to General Franco’s policy of opening the country up to visitors in order to help boost the economy. And by the 1980´s over 2 million tourists a year were arriving on FLIGHTS TO LANZAROTE from across Europe. With the UK in particular a key source of visitors. Today Lanazarote´s popularity has waned al little thanks to the fact that there are now many more holiday destinations for consumers to choose from. But vacations on the island remain surprisingly popular, especially with hose in search of self catering accommodation. With LANZAROTE VILLAS and apartments offering excellent value for money. The island is divided into five main municipalities and has a population of around 140,000 residents. About 6% of these are from the UK, as the island has a large British expatriate community. Many of whom own business in the main holiday resorts, which are called Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Temperatures on the island average out at about 21 Celsius all year round. But obviously climb higher than that in the summer months, when the mercury can easily reach 30 Celsius. There is very little rainfall on Lanzarote, which explains why the island is so dry and arid in appearance. Although there are greener spots in the north such as the Valley of 1000 Palms. The islands location off the coast of Africa and its semi tropical climate means that tourists can enjoy holidays here at any time of the year.
